27 Things I’ve Learned at 27

Updated: May 6, 2020

Today I turn 27. I’m officially way closer to 30 than 20, but I am so thankful for all of the things I’ve gotten to do in my life so far. As I sit here reflecting on the past year and year thinking of what lies ahead, I came up with 27 things I’d want to share with Amanda of the past.

  1. Tell the people you love how you feel about them, and do it often.

  2. Take the trip. The memories are worth it.

  3. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself. Life is too short to be so serious.

  4. Cherish your close family and your friendships. These people are in your life because they want to be.

  5. Sometimes it’s okay to not have a plan.

  6. Color coordinated and laminated schedules are also okay.

  7. You’re never too old to believe in Magic.

  8. Leopard print matches with everything.

  9. Even if you’re an adult you can still get acne.

  10. If someone has seen you at your worst and loves you anyway, keep them around.

  11. If you want to cut your long hair very short, wait two days. If you still want to do it then go for it.

  12. Being self respecting and self aware are two of the best things to be.

  13. Over plucked eyebrows don’t look good on anyone.

  14. You never know who you’ll meet that can change your life.

  15. You don’t need to be good at everything. It’s okay to make mistakes.

  16. Don’t wear a coat when you go to the mall in the winter. You’ll get hot and frustrated and won’t be able to shop effectively.

  17. A compliment can brighten someone’s day.

  18. Having a long commute can make you feel crazy. You’re not. It’s fine. Everything’s fine.

  19. It’s okay to distance yourself from people who exude negativity.

  20. Always make time for coffee.

  21. It’s possible to meet friends on the Internet that won’t kidnap you.

  22. Your worth is not defined by a number on a scale.

  23. Speak up for yourself and your ideas. You are worth it.

  24. Knowing how to do your hair and makeup in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident is a valuable skill.

  25. You don’t have to wash your hair every day.

  26. If you’re able, spend more time with your parents. As we get older, so do they.

  27. Love yourself. Embrace your flaws. Be authentic. You are the only you in the whole entire world. That’s really freakin cool.
